Te Taiao Impact Hub

2024 – present

Overview

My Impact Project in the Te Taiao (Nature) Hub focuses on understanding and protecting freshwater and marine ecosystems. Through this programme, students work alongside environmental organisations to investigate real-world conservation challenges and develop practical skills through field-based learning.

My role

Student researcher supporting stream monitoring, water testing, indicator species identification, and findings communication.

Impact

Developed field observation, critical thinking, and environmental stewardship skills — and built relationships that led directly to real-world conservation opportunities including sea turtle release events.

Field notes

As part of the project, our class partnered with the Mountains to Sea Conservation Trust, participating in hands-on environmental fieldwork such as stream monitoring, water testing, and identifying indicator species. These experiences helped build a deeper understanding of ecosystem health and how scientists assess environmental change.

Working with Mountains to Sea also opened further opportunities to connect with conservation initiatives beyond the classroom. Through this relationship I was able to engage with wider marine conservation work, including activities linked with Kelly Tarlton’s Sea Life Aquarium, where injured sea turtles are rehabilitated before being returned to the ocean.

This pathway ultimately led to the opportunity to attend and observe the release of rehabilitated sea turtles back into the wild, providing a powerful real-world example of how conservation science, community partnerships, and education work together to protect marine life.

Through the Impact Project I developed skills in field observation, critical thinking, collaboration, and environmental stewardship, while gaining a deeper appreciation of how local conservation efforts connect to global ocean health.
