Seaslugs & Seaweed

2025 – in development

Overview

Seaslugs & Seaweed is an educational board game inspired by Snakes and Ladders, redesigned around marine conservation themes. Positive actions and healthy ecosystems help players progress, while pollution and invasive species set them back. I am developing a large event version and a portable board version to reach different audiences.

My role

Concept creator, game designer, illustrator, and education storyteller.

Impact

Created an engaging learning tool that makes conservation ideas memorable for children and families.

Field notes

I noticed that EMR had limited waiting-time activities for younger kids, so I started building a game that would make learning interactive from the moment they arrived.

The board includes real New Zealand examples of marine challenges and solutions. I designed each square to spark questions, discussion, and curiosity rather than passive reading.

My long-term plan is to pilot the game at public events, gather feedback from educators, and iterate the design for broader use.
